Description: AMERICAN LITERATURE, BEFORE 1860: THE AMERICAN RENAISSANCE, 1820-1860 ***** DISTRIBUTION COURSE GROUP 1 ***** This course will concentrate on careful readings of four classics of U.S. culture written in the early 1850's: Herman Melville's "Moby Dick," Henry David Thoreau's "Walden," Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin," and Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass," 1855 edition.
