Description: AMERICAN LITERATURE, BEFORE 1860: THE AMERICAN RENAISSANCE, 1820-1860 ***** DISTRIBUTION COURSE GROUP 1 ***** This course will concentrate on careful readings of four classics of U.S. culture written in the early 1850's: Herman Melville's "Moby Dick," Henry David Thoreau's "Walden," Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin," and Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass," 1855 edition. We will attempt to understand the ongoing force these texts have for readers, and to understand the cultural moment that enabled their composition. ***** INSTRUCTOR: Derrick, Scott
