Description: THE FOURTH WORLD: ISSUES OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE ***** DISTRIBUTION COURSE GROUP 2 ***** In contrast with people self-identified within political structures of the First, Second and Third Worlds, Fourth World peoples are, generally speaking, "stateless peoples". In this course we will examine both how this "unofficial" status affects their struggle for self-determination and how native peoples engage traditional beliefs and practices for self-empowerment. Through readings, films and speakers we will examine current conflicts facing indigenous people in North and South America, the Soviet Union, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
