Description: SURVEY OF 20TH CENTURY BRITISH LITERATURE: IRISH LITERATURE ***** DISTRIBUTION COURSE GROUP 1 ***** How is Irish literature different from English? We will answer that question by surveying the literary riches of the Emerald Isle in the 20th century, beginning with the Literary Renaissance around 1900 (Yeats, Synge, Joyce), the plays of Beckett, Shaw, and Friel, the novels of Bowen, O"Brien, and Doyle, and the poetry of Heaney, Muldoon, and Boland. Much of the course will be devoted to recent writers, whose work constitutes a second renaissance. Two issues will guide our reading: first, how Ireland's status as a colony influenced its literature; and, second, how femininity and masculinity are depicted in a land that historically has been conceived as a woman. The course will introduce basic concepts in postcolonial and feminist theory. ***** INSTRUCTOR: Lamos, Colleen.
