Exploration of aspects of Western humanist and anti-humanist traditions from the early modern period to the present, with emphasis on how writers within each tradition understood fundamental terms like human nature, self, community, morality, and freedom. Includes literary, theological, and philosophical texts, as well as contemporary critical theory. Must see instructor before preregistration. Not offered 2003-2004.
