Description: SOCIAL AND CIVIL RIGHTS IN THE EUROPEAN UNION ***** An examination of the rights enjoyed by persons in the European Union, including human rights, rights as citizen, and social rights. Special emphasis will be placed on nationality, gender, race and other forms of discrimination within the European Union. The course will focus on the series of landmark cases in the European Court of Justice. The course includes a review of the historical and political events that formed the European Communities which became the European Union. Also includes an examination of the political institutions of the European Union. One goal will be to compare the union of European States under the Treaty of Union and the American union under the United States Constitution. ***** Enrollment limited to 20. ***** Also offered as SOCI 326.
