Description: DEMOCRACY & POLITICAL THEORY IN ANCIENT GREECE ***** Democracy and political theory are two of the greatest legacies of the ancient Greeks. This course will consider how democracy first arose in Athens from its roots in the sixth century BCE until the full-fledged democracy of the fifth and fourth centuries. Democracy in Athens was a direct democracy, which is considerably different from democracy in modern western nation states. The course will consider how Athenian direct democracy functioned and what are the differences between ancient and modern democracy.
