Description: THE LANGUAGE & CULTURE OF MEDICINE AND HEALTH CARE ***** DISTRIBUTION COURSE GROUP 1 ***** An exploration of the differences between Anglo-American and Latin-American languages and cultures of medicine. This course will navigate the treacherous socioeconomic and cultural rift between high-tech Anglo-American medical institutions and rural Latin-American conceptions of the role of doctors, medicine, and health care. Through live and taped interviews and presentations made by health care providers, students will gain first-hand knowledge of the varieties of Spanish and of the problems posed by norms and protocols, customs and courtesy, to the medical translator, interpreter or health care provider. Of special interest to students interested in Latin American culture and those wishing to pursue careers in the health professions, medical translation or interpretation.
