Description: ADVANCED LATIN: LITERATURE OF EXILE IN THE ROMAN TRADITION ***** The course will focus upon Latin works on exile in both prose and poetry. Authors will include Virgil, Ovid, Cicero, Seneca, and lesser known figures from late antiquity. Among the topics that we will explore are the actual circumstances of exile in ancient Rome, the development and nature of the consolatory tradition in exile literature, the relation of exile poetry and elegy, Roman encounters with conceptions of foreigners, and the ways in which exile shaped Roman notions of cultural and individual identity.
