Description: WOMEN IN CHINESE LITERATURE ***** A historical and critical survey of women's roles in classical Chinese literature (poetry, prose, fiction and drama), as writers, readers, critics, and protagonists, focusing on important literary texts and some theoretical essays. Topics will include China's patriarchal tradition and women's response, enculturing the female body and femininizing male poetics, poems by women and poems in women's voice, women as domestic aliens and aliens portrayed as women; interplay of popular culture and elite culture, etc. All readings are in English translation. No previous knowledge of Chinese literature or the Chinese language is required.
