Description: PATTERNS OF THE CHINESE PAST ***** This course will examine certain broad patterns of historical change in China from the Shang dynasty (c. 1800 BC. to 1100 B.C.) to the 20th-century. An emphasis will be placed not only on major political, social, economic intellectual and cultural transformations, but also on a number of important individuals whose lives seem in some way to exemplify these changes or to reflect the debates and conflicts surrounding them.
