Description: FRESHMEN SEMINAR: ROPE AND FAGGOT - TERROR & AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY ***** 'Rope and Faggot: Terror and African American History from the Murder of James Byrd'. From the early 1880s to 1968, nearly 5,000 African Americans died at the hands of lynche mobs. Since the end of the Civil Way, terror and the ways blacks responded to it have shaped nearly every aspect of African American history. This seminar examines black society, politics, gender relations, and culture in 20th century America against the backdrop of racial violence. ***** Enrollment limited. ***** Also offered as HIST 176
