Description: This interdisciplinary course will explore the relationship between language, text, and the visual arts. The class will examine poet/artist collaborations, text-focused artistic movements such as Dada, Surrealism, and the early text-based works of the 1960s, along with contemporary artists and writers who push the boundaries of their fields. Field trips, readings, group discussions, and class critique will all be integral to this course. Students will develop projects, either through individual investigation or group collaboration, examining how words and images might intersect. The semester will culminate in a publication of these projects. Space in studio classes is limited. Registration does not guarantee a place in class. The class roster is formulated on the first day of class by the instructor.
