Description: This course provides students with an introduction to conducting environmental journalism. We will explore a range of topics related to environmental journalism, including environmental justice, environmental health, urban design and history, and contemporary policy related to the environment. In partnership with local non-profit journalists, students will develop pitches for stories, research real-time news, conduct research related to environmental topics in the Houston area, and have opportunities to publish their stories with local digital newsrooms and non-profit radio. Students will leave the course with an understanding of how journalism works, the process of developing short and long-form stories, and an understanding of the different demands of different storytelling media (e.g.- radio vs. newspaper, online vs. tv, etc.).
