Description: How has drawing been practiced, understood, tested, and re-thought in the modern period? This course will explore these questions through in-depth readings and close study of works of art in the Menil Drawing Institute, which houses one of the world's best collections of the medium. Meetings will frequently take place on site at the Menil, and involve curators, conservators, and other museum staff. Part of students' work will be to prepare a joint exhibition, emerging from class discussions, that utilizes and explores Menil Drawing Institute resources. Graduate students will be assigned additional readings throughout the semester and submit a final paper of 20-30 pages in length. Cross-list: HART 390.
