Description: An exploration of the relation between New Orleans and writing in and about it. Despite and often because of the social, legal, cultural, and environmental storms that have battered the “Accidental City,” a remarkably rich trove of writing dependent on New Orleans for plot, character, style, and inspiration has appeared and continues to appear. Work by such authors as Kate Chopin, William Faulkner, Tennessee Williams, Walker Percy, Eudora Welty, John Kennedy Toole, Michael Ondaatje, Sarah Broom, Maurice Carlos Ruffin, and others will be studied. Students will create their own New Orleans text in a final paper.
