Description: This course introduces the fundamental principles of mechanics applied to the analysis and characterization of biological systems. Topics covered include normal and shear stresses, normal and shear strains, mechanical properties of materials, load, deformation, elasticity and elastoplastic behavior. Quantitative analysis of statically determinate and indeterminate structures subjected to tension, compression, torsion and bending will be covered. Additionally, aspects of blood rheology, viscoelasticity, and musculoskeletal mechanics will be addressed. Mutually Exclusive: Cannot register for BIOE 572 if student has credit for BIOE 372.
