Description: Algorithms are a series of step by step instructions in a procedure that finishes and which is shown to work in all cases. This course addresses the formation of algorithmic cultures through the domains of digitality and ontology in South Asia and the Middle East. It introduces students to the concepts of algorithmic neutrality, discrimination, management and governance. The course explores how deep-learning algorithms may undergird an intensification of surveillance and securitization technologies with profound effects on human and post-human futures. The graduate course requires the final research paper to be about twice as long as the final research paper in the undergraduate course (10,000 vs. 5,000 words). Cross-list: ASIA 357.
