Description: This course explores the complex power dynamics between Latin America and the United States from the 19th century to the present and identifies how both regions have been shaped by each other. This has been a relationship marked by intense power imbalances, with the United States using its military and economic might to meddle in Latin American affairs. At the same time, this history has also been characterized by an uneasy interdependence and by deep cultural and political exchanges. Themes include United State's military and economic interventions in Latin America; democracy and radical politics; race and racism; migration and Latinx histories; and arts and music.
