Description: Comprising some of the greatest Hollywood productions of the 1940s and 50s, film noir is characterized by its despairing moods, violent protagonists, femmes fatales and intricate criminal plots. This class will examine the formal and narrative conventions of film noir and explore its cultural and political contexts. Students will be introduced to different modes of filmic and cultural analysis. Films will include "The Maltese Falcon," "Double Indemnity," and "Scarlet Street," among others. This course is limited to first year students only, any others will be removed from this course. Cross-list: HART 119.
