Description: The development of travel and travel narratives from the early medieval period through
the 20th century, identifying why people travel and how those motives change over time.
Examining spiritual journeys; fear and desire; the foreign gaze (east looking west);
fictitious and vicarious travelling; geography/ethnography; antiquarianism; the gendered
path; divine landscapes and the search for the authentic.
