Description: Biomaterials covers the design and synthesis of materials which interact with biologic phenomena such as cell-free, microbial, and mammalian systems. Topics covered include: surfaces and surface fractionalization, biomedical implants and them immune response, three dimensional cell culture systems, and regulatory hurdles (e.g., FDA clearance). The class will be rooted in a historical perspective, with a particular emphasis on the latest techniques in synthetic chemistry relating to biomaterials.
