Description: This course provides a sociological lens for analyzing educational inequality in the US. The course begins with an introduction of the concepts of educational equality and inequality, then turns to an analysis of the factors that shape schooling outcomes. In addition to addressing the role of students, we carefully consider the role of families, neighborhoods, and schools, including school organization and teachers, as well as the interaction of these influences. In this course, we will discuss a variety of special topics, including the education of immigrants, school segregation, accountability, higher education, and the future of educational inequality.
