Description: This course examines Latin American Art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the eras of independence and revolution. We will examine such topics as art and nationalist discourse; legitimation/appropriation of the past; gender; art, dictatorship and revolution; surrealism; indigenism and social realism; the politics of muralism; plus modernism and alternative modernisms. Taught in English Open to first year students only, any and all others will be removed. Cross-list: FSEM 156.
