Description: Exploration of the relationship between classical antiquity and opera. To be discussed: Italian language history, literary criticism (Aristotle and Horace), birth of opera (ca. 1600), Ovid's influence, Greek and Roman history, pastoral poetry, recurrent efforts to 'reform' and correct 'abuses' in compositional style in music and poetry.
