Description: This course surveys the visual culture of Southern Europe and the Americas during the seventeenth century. We will study the work of major artists - including Caravaggio, Bernini, Borromini, Murillo, and Velazquez - as well as the introduction and adaptation of European artistic models in Central and South America. Graduate students will be rquired to write a mock grant proposal, which suggests a project to be researched, situates the project in the historigraphy on Baroque art (with bibliography), and outlines a proposed schedule. In addition to completing all the requirements of the course, they will be expected to complete additional readings and a substantial research paper at the end of the semester. Cross-list: ARCH 679.
