Description: This course will trace music from the medieval courts and cathedrals to twentieth and twenty-first century concert halls. It will be taught using selected pieces of music representative of a specific time, place and situation in western Europe and western Russia. Music tells a great deal about how a society functions; it opens windows to social history, philosophy, concepts of math and of science, art, literature and architecture.
