Description: Using the methodologies of art history, social history, cultural anthropology, and visual culture studies, this course examines the visual, material, and textual culture of childhood in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe. We will study a wide range of cultural production, from pedagogical treatises, saints' lives, and painted birth trays to the portraits of elites painted by artists like Bronzino, Velazquez, and Goya.
