Description: An introduction to the architecture, ceramics, textiles, and arts of the book of the Islamic world, from Egypt to India and Central Asia, beginning in the wake of the Mongol conquests and ending with the demise of the Ottoman empire. Focusing on court patronage and production, the course examines key buildings and objects through their aesthetic, cultural, religious, and political contexts. Methodological concerns of the field are addressed through an exploration of such themes as iconoclasm, word and image, and cross-cultural influences.
