Description: This course provides analytical frameworks for managing the internal working of firms and how they affect a firm's ability to create and maintain competitive advantage. The course provides a set of analytic frameworks drawn from strategy, economics, and organization theory for thinking about how strategic choices are made in organizations and their impact on competitive advantage. Topics include resource allocation and strategy implementation, emergent versus deliberate strategy making, make-or-buy decisions, franchising, core capabilitites and core rigidities, allocation of decision rights in firms, incentive systems, and optimal organization structures. The course uses case analyses of companies and a combination of class discussion and a combination of class discussion and lecture to examine these topics.
