Description: Using the value chain as the organizing framework, this class explores how firms design business processes and management information systems to achieve strategic advantage through a competitive cost structure. Competitive cost structures are increasingly obtained, not through technical efficiencies of a single firm, but through innovative collaboration among firms--what has been termed the extended enterprise. Thus more than half of the course considers strategic cost management at the boundaries of the firm--where the firm interacts with suppliers, strategic alliance partners, customers and society. Repeatable for Credit.
