Description: Seminar examines the ideological and political origins of genocide in 19th century racism and imperialism and the turn to brutal "total wars" and wars of annihilation in the 20th century. Topics include European imperialism in Africa, the Armenian genocide, the Holocaust, Stalinist ethnic purges, Cambodia, Rwanda, and Bosnia.
