Description: Course examines how writers respond to the developments and problems of democratic societies. Topics include: civil disobedience and just dissent; the civil war and the extension of the franchise; cruel and unusual punishment exercised by governments; and the relationship between privacy and individuality. Requirements: two essays and one class presentation. Cross-list: HUMA 110.
