This graduate seminar examines Roman and Ottoman notions of empire, European and Eastern historiography of empire in the 18-19th centuries, and imperial practice as it was conceived and carried out in both the Ottoman and British contexts (focusing primarily, but not exclusively, on Egypt and India).
