Description: MEDIEVAL EMPIRES ***** 'Empires and Communities in the Middle Ages'. Out of the "ruins" of the Roman Empire two empires emerged that claimed to be the rightful successor to the Roman Empire: The Byzantine Empire and the Holy Roman Empire. One important aspect of their rivalry was the conflict between the Eastrn church in Constantinople, and teh center of the Western church. This seminar course will explore the political, social, and economic conception of these Meditrranean and European empires: their self-perception, the role of Roman tradition and languages, their notion of (geographical) borders and naitons, the different constitution in political representation, administration, and economic organization. Offered with additional work as Hist 323. ***** Also offered as MDST 323. Cross-list: HIST 323, MDST 323, MDST 223.
