Description: CONTINUUM BIOMECHANICS ***** This course deals with elements of continuum mechanics relevant to bioengineering. The course covers important concepts in tensor calculus, kinematics, stress and strain, and contitutive theories of continua. Selected topics in bone, articular cartilage, and cell biomechanics will be discussed to illustrate the application of contiuum mechanics to bioengineering problems. A highlight of the course is a teaching project, where students lecture on a specific area in continumm biomechanics. ***** Enrollment limited to 10. ***** Prerequisite(s): Graduate student or permission of instructor.
