These changes include the rise of: scientific inquiry and its implications for the study of history and aesthetics; nationalism; state institutions; industrialization; new social, economic and political forms; urbanization and suburbanization; the middle class and new audiences for architecture; photography and other media; new transportation technologies; new materials and techniques of construction; and disciplinary professionalization and specialization.
