Description: The course focuses on the concepts of coloniality, exoticism, and abstraction. It examines the "Orientalist" tradition in works by Delacroix, Chasseriau, Matisse, and Assia Djebar; exoticism according to Gauguin, Segalen, and Khatibi; the postcolonial baroque in artifacts by Simon, Boudjedra, and Glissant; abstraction in Borduas, Atlan, and Khadda's paintings. A reduced reading list to undergraduates. Cross-list: FREN 487, Graduate/Undergraduate Equivalency: HART 587. Mutually Exclusive: Cannot register for HART 487 if student has credit for HART 587.
