Description: A survey of major developments in English, starting from its Indo-European and Germanic origins, then observing stages of the language from Anglo-Saxon to Middle English to Early Modern English via literary landmarks. Includes phonological, morphological, syntactic, and lexical developments, as well as sociolinguistic aspects such as the emergence of "standard English" and the development of post-colonial Englishes.
