Description: Combines history, urban geography, fiction, travel writing and film to engage in debates about urban modernity in four 19th-20th century Middle Eastern cities: Cairo, Beirut, Baghdad, Istanbul and Izmir (Smyrna). Explores intersections of memory, history, and space in the modern imagination and the real and imaginary experiences that shape our relations to the spaces of the city.
