Description: Survey of Latin pastoral, with readings drawn from Virgil's ECLOGUES, Calpurnius Siculus, Nemesianus, and early Christian pastoral. Topics will include the history of pastoral, the nature of the genre, the politics of the poems, and their intertextuality. Later history of pastoral, particularly in English tradition, will also be examined.
