Description: This course explores contemporary strategies for developing distinctly female cinematic voices and gazes, including Varda's cinematic language, Dura's use of silence, and Djebar's lyricism, Films by Akerman, Benguigui, Denis, Kurys, and Serreau illustrate other approaches; readings provide theoretical underpinnings to notions of the gaze and the role of the spectator. This course is limited to first-year students only, any others will be removed from this course. Cross-list: FREN 137.
