Description: This seminar examines the architectural and urban culture of the Ottoman Empire in the early modern and modern periods, and in different contexts including the imperial capital Istanbul and the port cities of Izmire and Salonica. We will begin by investigating questions of cultural legacy and appropriation; building patronage and urban development; court and urban life; in an attempt to address modernity outside European context.
