Description: Examination of the ways in which women have been represented in fiction, by themselves and by others, since the early modern period. Readings from Mme. de Lafayette, Graffingly, Baudelaire, Sand, Villiers de L'Isle-Adam, de Beauvoir, Duras, and Wittig, with emphasis on the constitution of the "feminine" in literary texts as cultural, historical, and social artifact.
