Description: In this course we will read nineteenth-century novels accompanied by their film adaptations, paying attention to conventions of both genres. While surveying these genres, we will discuss themes and issues such as domesticity, marriage, gender, race, class, science, imperialism, spectacle, interiority, and psychology as well as focusing on the directors' choices of mise-en-scene and cinematography and the way these choices reflect their interpretations of the novels. Repeatable for Credit.
