Description: Renaissance England produced some of the greatest and most influential plays and poems in the English language, including those of William Shakespeare. Our survey will consider Shakespeare's writing from the perspective of the institution of the theater, which was cloesely connected to social concerns of the day and from the perspective of his use of language, which set standards for dramatic beauty, power, and complexity for centuries to come. We will examine the major poems, plays, and genres in which he and other of his day wrote, and close by considering the legacy of Shakespeare's works.
