Description: Introduction of the history of the visual arts of China from the Bronze Age to the present. We will pay special attention the artworks' physical and social contexts (e.g. tomb, temple, court, literati's garden and studio, city, nation-state). Topics include: funerary art and the imagination of the afterlife, art and imperial cosmology, rise of literati aesthetic, relationship between landscape painting and calligraphy, and the emergence of propaganda avant-garde art in Modern China.
