Description: LATIN AMERICAN TOPICS ***** What exactly is Latin America (a geographical region, cultural area, etc.)? What is its relation to the Western World? What does it mean to be Latin American? The answers to these seemingly straightforward questions can vary widely depending upon the context. By examining icons, process of knowledge production, popular cultures, and cultrual producers, this course addresses the question(s) of how Latin America/Americas have come to be defined is a wide scope of areas including musical beats, dancing stles, scholarly statements, and mass media. We will analyze materials such as images, written texts, films, and music by utilizing the theories and tools of cultural anthropology. This is an introductory course designed for students interested in all or some of the following topics: Latin America, popular culture and cultural production, the study of cultural aspects of processes of globalization and Cultrual Anthropology.
