ENGL 491 - STUDIES IN MAJOR AMER. AUTHORS

Long Title:
Department: English
Grade Mode: Standard Letter
Course Type: Lecture
Credit Hours: 3
Description: STUDIES IN MAJOR AMERICAN AUTHORS: JAMES & WHARTON ***** Henry James and Edith Wharton are two of the United States greatest realist novelists, and though the younger Wharton outlived James by 22 years, they also had a complex and compelling friendship. The texts of both writers have also inspired a host of film adaptations, from James' Portrait of a Lady, Wings of the Dove, and the Turn of the Screw, to Wharton's The House of Mirth and The Age of Innocence. The pleasurable process of reading great novels and watching how films subsequently visualize them--or the reverse-- deepens one's sense of both books and films, and the possibilities, languages, and limits of both mediums. ***** INSTRUCTOR: Derrick, Scott Repeatable for Credit.
