Description: A study of six famous literary works, from classical civilization to expressionism, and their incarnation in famous musical compositions. Authors include Vergil, Shakespeare, Beaumarchais, Pushkin, Goethe, and Buchner; paired pieces include operas by Berlioz, Verdi, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Gounod, and Berg. No technical or reading knowledge of music is required. This course is limited to first-year students only, any others will be removed from this course. Cross-list: FSEM 112.
