Description: Autonomic nervous system control of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Development of a large scale model of the human cardiopulmonary model used to simulate measured data from functional laboratory tests. Includes a study of instrumentation and techniques used in the cardiac catherization laboratory. A discussion of ventricular assist devices is included. The course serves as an introduction to engineering in cardiovascular diagnosis and critical care medicine. Requirements: Knowledge of ordinary differential equations; electricity and magnetism, and solid mechanics from elementary physics; linear control theory and elementary physiology of the cardio vascular and respiratory systems.
